How Soon After Passing Can a Loved One in Spirit Communicate?

When our time on Earth comes to an end, our spirits, also referred to as our souls, make the journey to Heaven. It is the place where we were created and where we return when our soul contracts come to an end on Earth. The bonds we share with those we love continues to exist through the invisible bond that connects all of us with one another. It is also the connection which allows communications to flow from one dimension to another.

As a professional spirit medium, I experience firsthand knowledge from loved ones in spirit every day. The transfer of information is much more complicated than a fireside chat. It is a form of communication that utilizes all my senses to share information between dimensions. It requires heightened awareness of the earthly and extrasensory senses, trust, knowledge of how it works, and energy to be open and receptive to the content sent through images, sounds, feelings, tastes, and smells. Not all the information is straightforward, as those in spirit often use symbols to bring information through. Learning how to properly work through and interpret the meanings takes knowledge and practice to develop expertise.

When Can Divine Communication Take Place?

Many people ask me how soon a loved one in spirit can communicate once they have crossed over. It is possible for those in spirit to communicate right away or within hours of passing. I have experienced immediate communications from both animals and people in spirit. I would like to note that while communication is possible, not every being in spirit is skilled at communicating as soon as they cross over. Some are better at it than others. Older souls, meaning those who have had many reincarnations, have this knowledge stored within the memory banks of their spirit. Therefore, it is easier for them to communicate soon after passing. I have also seen and experienced loved ones in spirit who receive assistance from the delegation of one to three beings in spirit who helped them cross over into Heaven. The delegation usually consists of at least one loved one in spirit who crossed over before them and can include other loved ones in spirit, as well as angels.

Give Yourself and Them Time to Adjust

While loved ones in spirit can communicate right away, it is important to give your deceased loved ones time to adjust to their new reality. It is equally important to allow yourself time to grieve and adjust to the changes in your life caused by the loss of a loved one. People who are in the depths of deep grief need time to heal. When someone in very deep grief reaches out to a spirit medium too soon, they may not be open and receptive to what their loved ones in spirit want to share. Grief and deep sadness tend to block spiritual communications because a person’s main focus is on painful emotions and situations. Often, they only want to hear what they want to hear, instead of what the loved ones in spirit want to share. Think of it this way, when you experience sharp physical pain, it tends to take over your mind and temporarily halt other thoughts. In fact, sometimes all you can think about is how to rid yourself of the physical pain. It is similar with emotional pain that accompanies strong grief in which the hurt of loss blocks out all other thoughts other than how to relieve the heartache.

Healing and the Grief Process

The time it takes for each person to process grief and work through the healing process is unique to each individual. There are many factors that contribute to the effects of grief including, but not limited to, the way someone passed, the depth of the relationship shared, and personal beliefs about what happens to us when we pass. While it is healthy to mourn the passing of a loved one and there is no set time limit on the grieving process, it is not emotionally healthy to dwell in the deepest of grief for extended periods of time. Choosing to remain in a state of perpetual sadness not only blocks you from living the life you are meant to live, but also prevents you from recognizing the signs and messages that loved ones may be sending from the Other Side.

If you need help managing your grief, there are many resources available, such as grief counselors, life coaches, spirit mediums, friends, family, and more. Learning how to manage grief does not mean you do not miss having your loved ones in spirit physically with you on Earth. It is natural to miss the presence of those we love. It is because of our relationships with them that we know and experience love in our lifetimes. I hope you find it as comforting as I do to know they are still in existence in their soul form and that our connection with them continues beyond life on Earth. On an important note, thousands of times loved ones in spirit have come through during readings to express how they want their loved ones here on Earth to continue on with their lives, knowing that they are still connected by the bonds of love with them. Moreover, those in spirit often express how they will help their loved ones on Earth through heavenly insights, signs, and in their roles as voluntary guardian angels for them.

Guidance from the Other Side

Our loved ones in spirit operate from a place of light, love, and expanded knowledge. Their purpose for communicating with you, directly or through a spirit medium, is to bring healing and guidance to your life. A person who has reached a state of acceptance regarding a person’s passing is much more likely to get the most out of their reading with a spirit medium. This is because grief is no longer clouding their ability to be receptive to the information being shared. By being open and receptive, the recipient of the reading is allowing those in spirit to come through the way they want to and share what they want to share.

They Communicate with You!

Your loved ones in spirit use your senses, too, to let you know that they are around. For example, they may place visual images in front of you that remind you of them. My father often uses signs related to firefighters and trains to let me know he is around. In addition, loved ones in spirit may play music in your head to give you answers to your prayers or that reminds you of them. You may also feel their presence, smell their perfume, or have strong taste cravings for the food they used to cook or eat. They orchestrate these wondrous occurrences for you in ways that are challenging for the human mind to comprehend at times. Unfortunately, some people dismiss these occurrences by trying to explain them away as coincidences. Nothing in this world is a coincidence, and it would truly amaze you to be able to comprehend the ways in which spiritual beings on the Other Side not only send signs, but also help us on Earth when they can. They use a tremendous number of ways to get our attention through signs, including appearances in our dreams. When you see them in your dreams, it is your loved ones in spirit trying to help you to overcome your fears, to provide messages of comfort, and to help you to work through issues you are facing.

Love Continues On

The love we share with our loved ones in spirit keeps us connected across dimensions. There is nothing that breaks that bond if we want to maintain it. They enjoy giving us proof of their existence through signs and communications from Heaven, which they are capable of doing almost immediately after crossing over and can continue to do so until we are reunited in Heaven.

Recognizing Signs from Heaven

Life on Earth is an accelerated course for soul evolution. We have voluntarily opted to live a lifetime on Earth to learn lessons for the development of our souls, and the negativity we encounter speeds up the process. In Heaven, negativity does not exist. Soul development does occur there; however, the lessons are based more on the giving of service, learning about the many levels of existence, and exploring the multi-faceted methods for communicating across planes. In our journey through life, we are not left to our own devices. Each of us is given extra assistance from our Heavenly Support Team, which includes God, the angels, loved ones in spirit, and spirit guides. They send us signs and messages on a daily basis that can help guide us on our life paths. The key to unlocking the knowledge that is at our disposal is to learn how to recognize and decipher the communications that are being sent from your support team in Heaven. The benefits of receiving this insider advice is almost immeasurable, as it can have far-reaching effects on the positive development of your soul.

Ascension Removes the Veil

When our loved ones ascend to Heaven, knowledge that was obscured from them while on Earth is revealed, giving them a better understanding of the reasons behind their experiences on Earth. They do not become all-knowing, but they do attain greater insight that enables them to see the events on Earth from a more informed perspective. This insight can be utilized to help you navigate your life path if you open yourself to the guidance that is shared by your Heavenly Support Team. In addition to your loved ones in Heaven, you have seasoned spirit guides and angels that have specific knowledge about your chosen life path. They have access to your Akashic Records, which contain information about your past incarnations, as well as the plans for your current incarnation on Earth. The plans contain the life lessons you have chosen to learn, as well as an outline of certain events that could potentially occur in your lifetime. These events could be major turning points in your soul’s evolution that come as a result of the choices you make about you, your relationships, your thought processes, and your purpose. In essence, you are never alone. There is always a kind and loving spirit nearby who is willing to assist you with your life path. Your Personal Tour Guides for Life

Each day you can receive messages from spirit that are like sign posts directing you toward the best path in your daily life, which also impacts your overall life plan. It is like having extremely knowledgeable tour guides to help you navigate the vast experiences of life on Earth. Because these tour guides are in the energy form of spirit and have advanced communication abilities, they use all our senses to get their messages across to us. The greatest challenge they have in communicating with human beings is the built-in system that purposefully creates obstacles through the illusion of fear. This system is referred to as the human ego. It is the seat of negative thoughts that tell you this cannot be possible, that you will not succeed, or that signs and messages from spirit are just a coincidence. You can teach yourself to break past the negative illusions and thoughts to experience the extraordinary connections with your Heavenly Support Team.

Breaking through the Veil

The mental block that is put in place when we are born, otherwise known as the human ego, is a veil that can be parted through conscious awareness of the existence of life beyond the human experience. The first step to managing the negativity created by the human ego is to recognize when thoughts of failure, dismissal, and self-depreciation enter our minds. Halt those thoughts in their tracks by acknowledging their presence and thinking “STOP” in your mind. Then, replace those thoughts with positive affirmations or beliefs about the topic. For example, if you catch yourself thinking the repeated references you keep seeing about your loved one in Heaven are just a coincidence, say “STOP” in your mind, and replace it with “There are no coincidences. These are signs from my loved one in Heaven.” By opening your mind to the extraordinary possibilities of the universe and trusting that loving spirits do exist on other planes, you can consciously open the communication channel that moves past the ego and delivers specific and helpful guidance for your life path.

Everyone Is Born with the Gift of Mediumship

Everyone is born with the ability to communicate via spirit. It is the way we communicate with God, the angels, our loved ones in spirit, spirit guides, and each other. Our prayers, thoughts, and requests for assistance are sent to God, the angels, and our loved ones using telepathic transmissions from one spirit to another, similar to the way in which wireless signals are sent from one computer to another. When we communicate with each other on Earth, these signals are being sent back and forth via our spirits; however, it is something that occurs in the background of conscious awareness. When you are speaking with someone, you know in your heart when a person’s words do not sound or feel right. There may be a nagging thought in the back of your mind or a slight clenching of your stomach muscles that may indicate that this person is not speaking his or her truth. This intuitive information comes from your spirit which houses a higher consciousness and understanding of spirit-to-spirit communication. Even though everyone is born with the gift of mediumship, it does not mean that everyone on Earth is destined to be a spirit medium who shares his or her gifts on a professional level. Just as certain people are born with the ability to excel in sports, others are born with the ability to excel in spirit communication. Your path is unique to you, and if mediumship is your calling, you will know it. If it is not, you can still learn how to use the gift to communicate with your Heavenly Support Team in a way that will benefit you and your loved ones.

A Map to Lead the Way

The benefits of tuning in to the positive messages which come from enlightened beings in Heaven can be equated to being given a map to help you find the most beneficial path to get to your destination, which is the evolvement of your soul through life lessons. Please know that spiritual beings will not give you all the answers or solve all your problems for you. They will sometimes only provide clues or messages to guide you along the way. It is your job as a soul seeking knowledge and learning lessons to make decisions through free will. If you were given all the answers, lessons would not be learned and there would be no point in taking the journey.

Examples of Signs

There are many ways that our Heavenly Support Team sends us messages. It is an abstract form of communication that uses all our senses and goes beyond straightforward verbal and non-verbal cues. Your mind must be open to experiencing and recognizing the extraordinary in the ordinary that surrounds you each day. Here are a few of the more common methods used to transmit messages:

Music – Songs you hear in your head or that play on the radio at seemingly coincidental times, are often messages from spirit. Pay attention to the lyrics that you are hearing. If you do not know all the words to the song or the title, look it up. There is a message in it for you about a current event in your life. You could also be hearing music that reminds you of a loved one who has passed away. For instance, my dad loved the band, I often hear “Don’t Stop Believing” in my head or on the radio at times when I need a positive boost. As a note, negative songs and lyrics are not sent from your Heavenly Support Team. They only send positive or helpful messages to help you navigate your life.
Visual Clues – When you see an object or image that reminds you of a loved one, it is them letting you know that they are around and that they are sending their love. For instance, one morning I turned on my television and there was a show on about model trains that popped up on the screen. I have no idea what channel I had left the television on the night before, but this was odd because it appeared to be a very old show from the 1960s. I immediately knew this was my dad letting me know that he was around and that he was sending me his love. His major hobby was collecting model trains. There are no coincidences in this world, and many people may have written that off as strange, but if you open your mind, you can learn how to recognize these subtle, and not-so-subtle, messages from spirit.
- When seeking guidance, pay attention to repeated messages that you see or read. Your Heavenly Support Team will place visual items in your path to help provide answers or guidance. Again, there are no coincidences. Pay attention to repetitious messages and signs as they are trying to help you.

Feeling a Presence – Some people on Earth have a very strong sense of extrasensory feeling, or clairsentience. They can physically feel the presence of a loved one in spirit. I often feel the presence of my cats who are in Heaven when I lay down to go to sleep. I feel the warmth of their love in the shape of their bodies that they had on Earth. It feels like a living cat has curled up next to me, and it may be accompanied by the feeling of a slight depression in the bed where they are laying. This may sound scary to some who have not experienced it; however, for those of us who have, it is comforting to feel the warmth and affection of loved ones in spirit.
- When guidance comes through the sense of feeling, you may experience a feeling that something is off with a situation, which may be accompanied by a clenching of your stomach. If it is an uplifting feeling of joy or great hope, you are being given approval to move forward.

Scent in the Air – Have you ever picked up on a scent in the air that does not seem to fit in with your surroundings, such as cookies baking in your office or cigar smoke in a non-smoking hotel? Loved ones in spirit alter the molecules in the air to pipe in certain scents that remind you of them. It could be the smell of their perfume or a mechanic’s garage. When you pick up these unusual scents in the air that seem to have no logical source, who is it that you think of? Is it your grandmother who baked great cookies for family gatherings? Is it your father who used to love working on cars and often came home smelling of grease and oil from his mechanic’s garage? The scents are usually strong and distinct, and they may be picked up on by others in your vicinity. That is because the scent is piped into the air when they send this type of message to you.
- Guidance through the sense of smell can sometimes have unusual connotations. For example, my Heavenly Support Team uses the scent of a skunk to indicate someone is on the defensive. When this occurs, I know how to handle the situation with great care as the person I am talking to may not be able to hear what needs to be said because they are too busy feeling as though they need to defend themselves or that they do not want to be negatively perceived for their decisions.

Cravings Out of the Blue – Have you ever had a sudden craving for your deceased mother’s apple pie, a craving so strong that you can taste it in your mouth? This is yet another way that spirit sends messages to us. The way they send this message is like the way they send messages that utilize our sense of smell. They alter the molecules in the air to send energy associated with certain tastes to the sensors in our mouths. This type of message is usually confused with physical cravings for certain foods. It is important when you experience a very strong craving to take a moment to think about whether this is a message being sent from spirit. Do you associate what you are craving with a particular loved one in Heaven? If so, acknowledge the loved one in spirit for their presence and the sign they sent. Know that they are there to support you in your endeavors and want you to know they are there for you.

Thank Them for the Signs

When you recognize the signs sent by your Heavenly Support Team, be sure to thank them for their efforts. They are always pleased when their transmissions are successful because it means that you are open and paying attention to their loving messages and guidance. You can also ask them for clarity and for more signs to reinforce the direction they would like you to go.

Experiencing Paranormal Activity? It Could Be Your Loved Ones in Spirit

There is much more to our world than what appears to be. Our loved ones who have crossed over into Heaven have amazing access to our world, which means they can not only communicate across dimensions, but also can make their presence known to us in ways that use all our senses. They do not mean to frighten you with their activity, but rather, they want to get your attention to let you know they are around and to share helpful information with you about your life or the lives of those you love. Anyone who has lost a loved one can experience paranormal activity. It does not mean you have a ghost in your home, but rather loved ones in spirit who are doing their best to let you know you are loved and supported. Knowing how they do this will help you to understand communications across dimensions and why it is happening.

There are many ways in which loved ones in spirit try to gain your attention. If you are ignoring their subtler signs, which can easily happen if you are not aware of the signs, they may increase their activities to the point in which you cannot ignore them. Usually, this is when people reach out to me to figure out what is going on. Here are some examples of how loved ones in spirit try to get your attention:

Seeing Signs from Spirit

Seeing them, a bar of light, or shadow out of the corner of your eye. Most of the time when you turn to look, the shape or image is no longer visible.
Repeatedly seeing numbers that remind you of a loved one in spirit, such as a house number, birthday, death date, anniversary, or favorite number.
Seeing repeated visual reminders of them in the form of images or words, such as frequent references to their favorite activities, jobs they worked, or favorite locations.
Visitations in your dreams.
The appearance or images of butterflies, ladybugs, cardinals, blue jays, dragonflies, hummingbirds, hawks, rainbows, coins, and more could be a sign that a loved one in spirit is near.
Moving objects, such as tilting pictures or artwork, knocking a picture or artwork over or off the wall, making a rocking chair rock on its own, or moving a small object like a pen.
Removing objects from your space and returning them. Often the objects are important to you or them, such as jewelry, photographs, keys, or watches.
Electronics acting up, including the digitizing of your television screen, the freezing or malfunctioning of phones and computers in a strange manner, lights blinking or blowing out, or car windows malfunctioning (going up and down on their own).
Seeing your loved one in spirit fully manifested in front of you like a ghost (rare but does occur). They do not do this often because it takes a tremendous amount of energy to do this and it can sometimes be disconcerting to the person seeing them.

Hearing Signs from Spirit

Hearing your name being called in their voice.
Hearing music that reminds you of them, especially if it is a song you would not normally hear or hearing it with perfect timing to coincide with your thinking of them.
Hearing music that plays in your head. As a note, they use this method to get direct messages to you. Look up the lyrics.
Hearing their name or nickname spoken by someone else.
Experiencing a radio or musical device acting up or turning on by itself with or without a power source.
Hearing people speaking when no one is physically in your presence. You may or may not be able to decipher the words.
Receiving thoughts that feel as though they are not your own and are heard in your own voice. They may come through as a word or phrase intended to help you. Loved ones in spirit will never send information telling you to hurt yourself or another.

Feeling Signs from Spirit

Feeling the presence of a loved one in spirit. There is a heightened awareness or feeling that your loved one in spirit is with you.
Feeling a touch, as though someone placed their hand on your shoulder or arm.
Feeling a wash of love from head to toe. This is when tingles start at the top of your head and travel throughout your body. This is one of the ways loved ones in spirit send you hugs from Heaven.
Mysterious pains or sensations associated with a loved one’s ailments or passing. Usually, this occurs with spirit mediums who are trained to decipher the difference between personal ailments and sensory communications from loved ones in spirit.

Smelling Signs from Spirit

Smelling a scent that reminds you of them or you attribute to them. It usually does not belong where you are and is very strong, such as a perfume or cologne, cigarette smoke, chocolate, mothballs, or a favorite food they cooked or baked. You may be the only one who smells it.

Tasting Signs from Spirit

Experiencing a strong craving or taste for food they made or liked, as well as tasting cigarette or cigar smoke.

There are numerous ways loved ones in spirit let you know they are around. None of them should be ominous or threatening in any way. Fears can be heightened when there is a lack of understanding about how the spirit world operates, which is why there is a lot of misinformation out there regarding this topic. Many books, movies, and television shows have notoriously depicted paranormal activity as demonic beings intent on harming you. This is due to misunderstanding how spirit communication works from the Other Side, as well as the purposeful heightening of the fear factor for attention-getting purposes in film and television shows. To this day, I have never encountered anything I considered demonic or a poltergeist. Even if something like that did exist, I give it no power. The majority of the time, it is your loved ones in spirit trying to help you with your life or letting you know they are around loving and supporting you. Loved ones in spirit will also send you repeated signs to provide guidance for your life. If you are unsure of what your loved ones in spirit are attempting to convey, you can always book a reading with a professional spirit medium to receive direct messages from your loved ones in spirit. As a side note, those who had a funny or mischievous side to their personality in life still have that and will delight in having a bit of fun with you regarding their signs and the movement of objects. Also, if you are unsure of who is sending the sign, ask using your thoughts “Who in spirit is sending this sign?” Whoever you think of first in spirit is who it is.

When Paranormal Activity is More Pronounced or Disturbing

It is important to note that there are times when I and others have encountered heightened paranormal activity which can be disturbing if you do not know the source of the activity and why it is occurring in a jarring way. The sources of these disturbances tend to be a being in spirit who has not crossed over into Heaven, and they may cause stronger activity that come across as frightening, such as slamming doors or breaking objects. These souls, who have not crossed over into Heaven, are temporarily stuck between dimensions and are frustrated with their situation. They mean you no harm and are not upset with you. They are in your presence because you are open to the energies of souls in spirit, whether you are aware of that or not. They are desperate to get your attention in order to receive help in crossing over to the Other Side. There are many reasons why a soul does not cross over right away, such as not believing they belong in Heaven because of what they were taught on Earth or because they feel they have not completed tasks on Earth. What they need is compassion and assistance to cross over fully into Heaven. Whenever I come across souls in this situation, I help them by reopening the gateway and calling in the Archangels to help them transition from this world to the next. If you are experiencing disturbing paranormal activity, it is a good idea to check with a professional spirit medium to have them look into the activity to determine who it is and what needs to be done. Just telling these souls to leave will not work. If they could leave on their own, they would. It is also important to note that souls who are stuck between worlds are not necessarily tied to a particular location on Earth. Where they decide to hang out has to do with their connection with the people there or the location itself. Their presence is usually accompanied by a heavy or negative feeling due to their frustration and heavier energies of the Earth which have not been fully shed for the higher and lighter vibrational energies which accompany souls in Heaven. Again, these are not poltergeists or demons, but souls in a frustrating situation who need assistance crossing over to the Other Side.

It Is All About Love

In essence, when you are experiencing paranormal activity, it is most likely your own loved ones in spirit letting you know they are around. Their paranormal activities usually increase around important events, occasions, and holidays, as well as when you are going through challenging times. In addition, about a week or two before and a week or two after you see a spirit medium for a reading, they increase their activities because they are excited about being able to bring through direct messages and communications to you.

Our world is an amazing place that is so much more than what is perceived on the surface. The good news is, that it all revolves around the love that connects each and every one of us through the hearts of our spirits. The next time you experience unusual or paranormal activity ask, with your thoughts, who it is in spirit who is responsible for the activity. Whoever you think of first is who it is. Say hello through your thoughts and thank them for their presence. They love it when you recognize their signs and the love they send.

Not Seeing Signs from Loved Ones in Spirit? Here Are Reasons Why

When a loved one crosses over into Heaven, they often send signs to let their loved ones on earth know they are in existence in spirit and still connected with them, as well as to share their love and let them know they are doing well in Heaven. Often, these signs can be very strong soon after their crossing. This is because they are still vested in the people they love on earth and want to bring them assurance and comfort during their time of grief. The signs must be very strong during these times because grief tends to immerse our souls in sadness, effectively blocking awareness of that which exists outside of ourselves. Because they recently crossed over, loved ones in spirit usually have an experienced guide with them to help orchestrate the occurrence of these signs.

Signs from Heaven

Immediately after a loved one in spirit crosses, it may seem as though there are no signs at all, or the signs may be very strong and clear then seem to lessen or disappear altogether. There are many reasons why it may seem as though loved ones in spirit are not sending as many signs or any signs at all. First, let us explore the ways loved ones in spirit send signs and examples of some of the stronger ones which may occur soon after they cross over into Heaven. Soon after a loved one in spirit crosses over into Heaven, they are often eager to send a sign to their loved ones on earth letting them know they have crossed over into Heaven, as well as to send their love and comfort. Often, loved ones in spirit are accompanied by a guide to help them during their time of transition and these guides assist with the sending of signs. Because people in spirit no longer have a physical body with which to send communications, they use the universal soul-to-soul form of communication, also known as spirit communication or mediumship, which is a much richer method for transmitting information. This method can utilize all the senses to provide a deep and direct connection with those they are trying to communicate with. The options are limitless when it comes to the many ways loved ones in spirit can send signs. Here are some examples of strong signs sent soon after a loved one crosses over into Heaven:

Seeing a loved one in spirit fully manifested in energy form, much like the appearance of a ghost, in which you see them in a slightly transparent form of themselves (Note: This takes a tremendous amount of energy and, therefore, a rare occurrence.)
Seeing loved ones in spirit in dreams
Finding coins or feathers in unusual places
Seeing repeated visual signs which remind you of the loved one in spirit, such as their favorite places in the world, hobbies, jobs, their name, or their relationship to the recipient, as well as butterflies, ladybugs, dragonflies, hummingbirds, doves, and more
Smelling a strong scent in the air which is reminiscent of the loved one who passed, such as their perfume or cologne, cigar or cigarette smoke, or the scent of their home
Catching a quick glimpse out of the corner of your eye of a presence in the form of the loved one in spirit or as a dark shadow (Note: Dark shadows are often misidentified as ominous entities, when they are really loved ones in spirit who are partially manifesting.)
Feeling as though a loved one in spirit placed a hand on one’s shoulder or affectionately touching your face – this feeling can be accompanied by a tingling sensation on the shoulder or face
Feeling a presence with you that is comforting
Hearing the voice of a loved one in spirit saying your name or words of comfort
Songs playing on the radio about Heaven or that remind you of a loved one in spirit
Electronics acting up for no explainable reason (e.g., blinking lights, electronic screens freezing up or digitizing, children’s toys or music devices playing on their own, etc.)
And much more

Reasons Why Signs from Loved Ones in Spirit Seem to Lessen or Not Occur

Often, people on earth expect their loved ones in spirit to manifest like a ghost in front of them and be able to hold a long conversation with them with questions and answers. This may happen; however, it is very, very rare. The energy it takes to do this is tremendous and the loved ones in spirit may not know how to do this immediately after crossing over. Instead, signs are sent to get their messages through. What happens though when it seems these signs are lessening over time or seem to disappear? Again, there are many reasons why signs may seem to lessen or not be present at all. It is not because your loved ones no longer care for you. They do and they are around you whether you are aware of their presence or not. Here are some examples as to why it may be challenging to recognize signs or why they seem to have dissipated:

Strong grief can temporarily block the ability to recognize signs (Note: This is because deep grief turns the attention inwards and can be all encompassing at times. Experiencing grief after loss is a natural process in which we need to give ourselves time to process our feelings and emotions, as well as time to adjust to the major transitions and changes to our lives.)
Not knowing how loved ones in spirit send signs or communicate with loved ones on earth
Expecting the same sign every time
Loved ones in spirit give us space to heal our hearts (Note: If they constantly made their presence known, those of us on earth would have difficulty moving forward because their presence may potentially prevent us from adapting to not having them physically with us on earth. This is a major transition for both you and your loved one. Even though your souls remain connected, adjustments need to be made and acknowledged for healing to take place.)
Times when loved ones in spirit are not allowed to interfere with decisions we need to make. It is during these times that it will feel as though they are not with us.
We are very sad or focusing too much on the mundane issues of life, which eats up focus and closes us off to recognizing signs
Misconstruing signs as representations of negative entities
Missing or dismissing signs due to lack of knowledge, fear, sadness, skepticism, or disbelief
Not giving yourself time to heal and adjust to the major transitions which occur when a loved one crosses over into Heaven, which can lead to a desperate search for signs when loved ones in spirit are trying to give you time and space to heal
They are learning how to send signs to loved ones on earth and participating in activities in Heaven which temporarily suspend the sending of signs

Be Kind to Yourself and Know Your Loved Ones in Spirit Are There for You

As with any major transition in our lives, we need time to adjust to the changes. While we are processing grief on earth and living our lives, our loved ones in spirit are also adjusting to their existence in Heaven. You and your loved ones in spirit are connected through the hearts of your spirits. There is nothing that can break the bond of the love you share. Be kind to yourself by giving yourself time to grieve, learn about how loved ones in spirit communicate and send signs, and have patience with yourself and your loved ones in spirit. They are there for you and will send signs when the time is right for you.

Sleep Paralysis: Scientific Phenomenon or Supernatural Fright?

Have you ever woken up unable to move, feeling as if something was pressing you down into the bed? This alarming experience is called sleep paralysis. It is a condition in which you feel mentally awake, but unable to physically move your body. The feeling may last for a few seconds or up to a few minutes. It often occurs upon wakening; however, it is also known to occur when one is in the process of falling asleep. It can be accompanied by a physical feeling of pressure on the throat or chest and an inability to vocally express oneself. Some people report feeling or seeing a presence in the room, which many perceive to be otherworldly and ominous in nature.

What is Sleep Paralysis?

According to Beth Roybal at WebMD (2023), when we are sleeping our body shuts down to prevent us from physically acting out our dreams. At times when we are awakened during the dream cycles of our sleep, the physical body remains in shut down mode which can create frightening sleep paralysis conditions. Essentially, it signals an issue with our bodies being slightly out of sync with our sleep cycles. During the Rapid Eye Movement (R.E.M.) cycle, which is when dreams occur, the body is placed in a relaxed mode that allows you to rest and prevents you from fully acting out your dreams. If you become conscious within the R.E.M. cycle, your body may remain in an immobilized state and your perceptions of reality can be peppered with altered-state illusions making it seem as though there is an ominous presence in the room. This is especially the case when we are in a state of extreme fright about not being able to move our bodies or vocally express our fear. It is not a being holding us down, but our own bodies preventing us from acting out our dreams. Sleep paralysis experiences usually only last a few seconds to a few minutes; however, it can feel as though it is much longer than that when you are in the midst of this type of episode.

Personal Experience with Sleep Paralysis

When I was in my teens, I recall experiencing this type of paralysis. It was extremely frightening to be incapable of moving my body or making a sound. I remember lying there, not knowing what was happening, just praying for it to pass. As panic bubbled up within, I attempted to calm my racing heart by slowing down my breathing and telling myself this would pass. My personal experience, while terrifying, only occurred once in my life, and it did not involve a perception of an ominous presence in the room. During my experience with sleep paralysis, I was able to talk myself through the experience until the sensors in my brain alerted my physical body to remove itself from dream mode. It is very frightening to experience sleep paralysis; however, I am glad to say it is an infrequent occurrence which may only occur once in someone’s lifetime, if at all. When it happens, though, it is an unforgettable experience.

Who is Affected by Sleep Paralysis and What Can Be Done

According to Roybal at WebMD (2023), the most frequent occurrences are reported in the teen years; however, sleep paralysis can happen to people of all ages. There are many underlying reasons why it occurs, some of which may include sleeping on one’s back, stress, sleep schedule changes, and lack of sleep. If sleep paralysis is a habitual problem, it is recommended that you talk with your doctor about your sleep patterns and conditions, as well as the stress levels in your life. There are many factors that affect our sleep, and if you are experiencing problems, it is best to speak to a specialist who can help you work on the issues.

Rest Easy

All in all, sleep paralysis has a scientific reason for occurring based on the natural functions of the human body. It is not an ominous being taking control over you. The fear factor runs high when this occurs, and in a dream-like state, this experience can quickly turn into a sort of waking nightmare in which the mind creates all kinds of scary reasons for its occurrence. For those who have experienced sleep paralysis, there are ways of minimizing the effects when you are experiencing an episode. Knowledge is power in this case as it can help you to recognize the condition for what it is and ease the effects. For example, when you know this is a condition in which the mind awakens to consciousness before the body, you can work on calming yourself down through deep breaths and repeating to yourself, “Everything is alright, this will pass” until it does pass within a few seconds or minutes.
